Echocardiogram Overview
An echocardiogram is a dedicated ultrasound of the heart which assesses the heart’s chambers, valves, and overall function. Long-term hypertension can lead to changes in the structure and function of the heart that are best seen on an echocardiogram. This is a non-invasive test which does not require any advance preparation and is performed in-office. To enhance the visual images, the echocardiography technician may administer a contrast agent injection through a temporary, peripheral intravenous (IV) line. The test itself typically takes up to 45 minutes.
- Identify structural changes in the heart's valves and chambers
